Early Beginnings: Early Literacy Knowledge And Instruction is the first publication in the Institute’s Cornerstone series—research-based publications that support early literacy practices—that draws on core findings from the National Early Literacy Panel Report. It is intended as a guide to help early childhood administrators, supervisors, and professional development staff support teachers in increasing their knowledge and refining their literacy practice.
Early Beginnings describes early predictors of later literacy skills, and suggests ways to share this information—and ways to apply it to teaching practice—with teachers. This practical guide includes a snapshot of what a high-quality preschool literacy environment looks and sounds like, and a Glossary of early literacy terms.
It should be noted that the authors chose to include recognition of environmental print as a moderate predictor which is not necessarily a finding from the panel’s report.
