Key Literacy Issues
The National Institute for Literacy sought to strengthen literacy across the lifespan, including early childhood. Research played a central role in this work. The Institute:
- Located scientifically based research findings that helped answer essential questions about early childhood literacy;
- Communicated the findings to educators, families, and caregivers in plain language in publications such as its Shining Stars series for toddlers and preschoolers and A Child Becomes A Reader: Birth – Preschool
- Examined professional development practices that support early childhood literacy instruction
- Identified topics to be studied in future research
