Sharing our Health Literacy Action Plan Stories
Discussion Announcement | Guest
This sharing of stories was a follow-up to last September’s guest discussion with Cynthia Baur about the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy. That first discussion was part of the kick-off of the Action Plan, showing how people could use it to support their work, and how they were starting to do so. This discussion came one year after the Plan’s release, and told new stories of the diverse organizations who have designed and implemented creative and successful work that supports the 7 goals of the Action Plan.
We heard from several newly created statewide health literacy coalitions, along with adult education programs, community health outreach agencies, researchers, and also very small projects that target specific groups, such as seniors in rural Maine.
The guest facilitator, Michael Villaire from the Institute for Healthcare Advancement (IHA), helped people to map their work to the 7 goals of the Action Plan, and also used this discussion as a kick-off to a unique social media event the day before IHA’s 10th annual Health Literacy Conference. The event was a collaboration between IHA, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and Health Literacy Missouri, and included a live video feed from the pre-conference, a twitter feed, and a Facebook component. The live portion of the event began with some stories that were shared during this list discussion.
