Abstract

This is a Promising Practices description of the GED Bridge to College Careers Program at LaGuardia Community College. The program is 14-weeks long and serves adults, ages 19 and older, and integrates GED preparation with rigorous college-level material using a career-focused curriculum. Contextualized coursework investigates themes in health care or business, and the world of work, and is designed as a springboard to either college or vocational training. Te program is free to students and includes preparation in all 5 GED subject areas that are contextualized to themes, includes academically integrated college knowledge and career awareness workshops led by a college transitions advisor, provides group and individual caree guidance, college admission and financial aid advisement, and provides retention support in first year of postsecondary education.

This resource introduces instructors and students to a promising practice from LaGuardia Community College for successfully transitioning adult students to post-secondary programs and improving retention.
