English for the Nursing Assistant
This resource supports the teaching of specific education and training content that can be implemented by classroom instructors in the context of a particular career cluster.
The English for the Nursing Assistant website was designed to support English language learners (ELLs) who are preparing for certification as a nursing assistant (CNA). The materials on the website correspond to the communication skills chapter in many CNA textbooks.
The four online lessons with videos support Adult Career Pathways programming for ELLs who are preparing for employment as a home health aide, personal care assistant, or medical assistant. Students will be able to: (1) Listen for main ideas in a lecture and take appropriate notes; (2) Pronounce key vocabulary as individual words and in the context of a sentence; read academic text; (3) Comprehend vocabulary; (4) Use positive speaking and communication skills between a CNA and patients or the licensed vocational nurse (LVN); and (5) Perform the complete steps of one CNA procedure – ambulating the patient.
This resource was reviewed and vetted through the Designing Instruction for Career Pathways initiative of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education under Contract No. ED-CFO-10-A-0072/0001.
