Industrial Measurement: Using Calipers to Assess Acceptable Dimensions

This activity is part of the Workforce Education Learning Activities Bank, an interactive resource of work-related basic skills lessons for use by instructors in the workplace or in traditional adult education programs and by adult learners. All activities within the bank were developed with the appropriate Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS), Equipped for the Future (EFF), and GED skills and standards in mind. This is the second activity of a three-part project on Industrial Measurement. The lessons could easily be combined into one learning activity or used separately as presented here. Participants in this lesson will learn how to use the calipers currently used for precise measurement in industrial settings. They will work individually to analyze whether given objects would meet the correct specifications required for a particular manufactured product.
The activity on using mathematics to solve problems and communicate is applicable to careers within the Architecture & Construction and Manufacturing career clusters. Students will be able to: (1) Use math to solve problems and communicate solutions; (2) Observe critically; and (3) Learn through research as they determine whether a manufactured product meets correct specifications for length, height, width, depth, and diameter based on the information furnished and their own observations.
