TEAL Math Works! Guide
An instructional resource in evidence-based mathematics and numeracy instruction for adult education teachers.
The Teaching Excellence in Adult Literacy (TEAL) Math Works! Guide,a companion piece to the TEAL Just Write! Guide, is an instructional resource for adult education teachers. It is designed to increase instructors’ familiarity with evidence-based mathematics and numeracy instruction and to facilitate the translation of research findings into teaching practices that will enhance the quality of instruction delivered to adult learners. It synthesizes important practices and competencies represented in current research on mathematics instruction. The principles presented are rooted in the work of the National Research Council, the U.S. Department of Education, and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, as well as in the Common Core State Standards, a product of the National Governor’s Association. Many of the activities are based on field-tested content from the Adult Numeracy Instruction-Professional Development (ANI-PD).
The guide synthesizes important practices and competencies represented in current research on mathematics instruction. The guide can be used by instructors to increase their familiarity with evidence-based mathematics and numeracy instruction and to translate research findings into teaching practices to enhance the quality of instruction delivered to adult learners. Features include a summary of research-based interventions, examples of classroom applications, and sample classroom activities.
