Description of the ASRP Profile 1

  • Profile 1 is part of the ASE Group of ASRP Profiles. The ASE Group is made up of three profiles (1 - 3) whose members scored between Grade Equivalent (GE) 9-12 on the DAR Silent Reading Comprehension subtest.
  • Profile 1 learners are the most capable readers in our sample.

Oral reading rate

On average, Profile 1 learners have the fastest average oral reading rate of all 11 profiles at 151 words per minute.

Many ASE level (GE 9-12) readers can read familiar texts with adequate speed and Fluency, but their lack of experience with the longer sentences and unfamiliar vocabulary of academic texts can slow their reading once they enroll in post-secondary education.

As a frame of reference, skilled adult readers (such as college students) have an average oral reading rate of 189 words per minute.RR
