Assessment Strategies and Reading Profiles

From the Field: Featured Resources

Researchers in the field continue to make new discoveries about effective assessment strategies to improve reading instruction. Practitioners and staff developers will find these resources to be useful in their practice.

  • The National Research Council’s 2012 report, Improving adult literacy: Options for practice and research is available free online. The full report contains an excellent Executive Summary, and additional short summaries are available for the general public, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. The NRC Report is potentially useful to program directors for writing proposals and to staff developers and practitioners to initiate discussions about current challenges and future directions for the field.
  • The National Research Council’s supplement, 2012, Improving Adult Literacy: Developing Reading and Writing presents an overview of what is known about how literacy develops, the component skills of reading and writing, and the practices that are effective for developing them. It also describes principles of reading and writing instruction that can guide those who design and administer programs or courses to improve adult literacy skills.
  • The TEAL Just Write! Guide is available free online. It contains research-based interventions and best practice instructional approaches in the content area of writing. The guide is designed for use by adult education administrators, staff developers, coaches and mentors, and practitioners at all stages of professional development.
  • The Network Studies were a series of long-term research studies funded jointly by OVAE, NICHD, and NIFL to investigate approaches to improving adult literacy instruction. The results of the studies are discussed in a webcast, “Getting results in the classroom: What research tells us.” The webcast should be especially helpful to staff developers and practitioners interested in teaching the components of reading - decoding, fluency, and vocabulary.
