Learning To Achieve

Research-Based Resources and Professional Development to Increase Achievement of Students with Learning Disabilities

The Program:
Learning to Achieve, initially launched by the National Institute for Literacy, is designed to build state capacity to increase the achievement of students with learning disabilities. It includes an integrated set of research-based resources, professional development materials and a Train-the-Trainer Institute, based on the latest rigorous research. These tools are designed to increase teacher effectiveness in providing services to adults with learning disabilities.

The Resources:
Learning to Achieve: A Review of the Research Literature on Serving Adults with Learning Disabilities PDF Format
The development of Learning to Achieve was informed by an extensive literature review that serves as a foundational document reflecting the current knowledge base. The six topics covered in the literature review are: assessment, English language learners, accommodations, teaching methods, transition, and impact of LD.

Learning to Achieve: A Review of the Research Literature on Employment Experiences and Outcomes for Youth and Adults with Learning Disabilities PDF Format
This literature review builds upon and supplements the research review and analyses conducted by A Review of the Research Literature on Serving Adults with Learning Disabilities. It is a review specifically targeted to research on adults in the areas of employment, adult education, and career development.

Learning to Achieve: A Professional’s Guide to Educating Adults with Learning Disabilities PDF Format
This companion guide to the training is a stand-alone resource for professionals who work with adults with LD and haven't taken the Learning to Achieve training. The six chapters reinforce and extend the content of the training modules. The chapters cover relevant characteristics of adults with learning disabilities matched with descriptions and examples of practical intervention strategies. A major theme in research and practice is that effective interventions for this heterogeneous group are appropriate for all individuals who struggle with learning.

The Professional Development:
Learning to Achieve provides three options for professional development – a Train-the-Trainer Institute, state/local level professional development provided by trainers who complete the Institute, and free independent , self-paced online learning modules available to the public. All use professional development modules covering core concepts such as the definition of learning disabilities and special topics, such as reading disabilities and explicit instruction techniques. The LINCS Regional Resource Centers (RRC) coordinate the delivery of the Learning to Achieve professional development.
