Boosting English Learner Instruction

The Standards-in-Action (SIA) 2.0 English Learner (EL) Institute teaches adult educators how to boost ELs' instruction through high levels of literacy and mathematics content and language development. It builds your capacity to translate teaching into stronger instruction that aligns with current EL research and reaches beyond life skills to prepare ELs for college and careers. It also teaches you about a range of instructional scaffolds so ELs can participate meaningfully in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes.

A central focus of the training is on building a learning community with many opportunities for ELs to process the content they are learning. Robust levels of discussion and reasoning include getting students to talk to students and placing responsibility on learners to process and share their reflections. The lesson activities are transferable to other content area lessons and adaptable to ELs studying at lower and higher instructional levels.
